Freelancing: The Dream

Freelancing: The Dream, the Reality, and the Lessons No One Tells You

Freelancing promises a lot: flexibility, freedom, autonomy. But what’s behind the Instagram-worthy desk setup and flexible schedules? According to George Langford, founder of Edge Talent Solutions, it’s grit, hustle, and a load of figuring things out as you go.

George made the leap from legal recruiter to solo founder without a safety net. No backup plan. No part-time gig. “I worked best with a bit of pressure,” he admits.

His journey offers a raw and honest look at freelancing—beyond the polished surface.

The Good Stuff

Let’s start with the wins:

  • Freedom: Whether it’s choosing your clients or going for a morning run, freelancing gives you the space to live life your way.
  • Control: George now chooses who he works with. “You don’t have to work with people you don’t like,” he says with a smile.
  • Meaningful Relationships: With no corporate structure, every connection matters. George highlights how networking walks and co-working spaces helped him build authentic relationships—ones that led to referrals, support, and even new friends.

The Real Stuff

But it’s not all freedom and 10 AM coffees.

  • Isolation: “You go from a busy sales floor to your kitchen table,” George says. That transition can be jarring, especially without a plan to stay connected.
  • Everything is Your Job: “Suddenly, you’re not just the recruiter—you’re the finance director, the marketer, the admin, the cleaner.”
  • Saying No is Hard: Early on, George took on work that didn’t feel quite right. The lesson? Not every client is worth your time—and saying yes to the wrong ones can pull you off track.

What New Freelancers Need to Know

If you’re toying with the idea of freelancing, George has some advice:

  • Start Networking Early: It’s not just about selling—it’s about getting known. The “know, like, trust” factor matters more than ever.
  • Get Support: An accountant and a virtual assistant can save you hours (and headaches). Even if you can do something, it doesn’t mean you should.
  • Test and Learn: Try different networking events. See what feels right. “Go to everything once. If you don’t like it, try it again just to be sure.”

And most importantly:

  • There’s No Perfect Time: Waiting for the stars to align? Don’t. George says it best: “Give it a go.”

Freelancing isn’t easy, but it can be incredibly rewarding. It’s a crash course in resilience, self-awareness, and growth. For those willing to lean into the discomfort, embrace the learning curve, and show up every day—there’s no limit to what’s possible.
